Memorial Day Activities

Can you believe Memorial Day is this weekend? For many, Memorial Day means barbecues, pools and a three-day weekend. It can be easy to lose sight of the significance of the holiday. But, it’s important to recognize and remember the military men and women who sacrificed and gave their lives for our freedom. We’ve previously shared lessons plans based around Memorial Day and today we’re bringing you some of our favorite Memorial Day activities that you can do leading up to and through the weekend.

  1. Create a history or social studies lesson around it. Use this internet treasure hunt from Education World as a starting point and discuss the answers in-depth.
  2. Another history lesson idea is to have your student research a US conflict. Have him/her create a poster, presentation or timeline of the conflict and present it to you.
  3. Are you and your learner crafty? Apples4theTeacher has fun flag and America themed crafts you can make to show off your pride.
  4. Get outdoors and visit a US National Cemetery. Leave flowers on a grave of a veteran (you’ll know who they are because there will be a flag in the ground by their tombstone).
  5. Take part in the National Moment of Remembrance which asks all Americans to pause for 1 minute at 3 PM (local time) “as an act of national unity in which all Americans, alone or with family and friends, honor those who died in service to the United States.”
  6. Participate in a local Memorial Day event. Go to a parade or festival if your town has one!
  7. Do you know the proper way to fold an American flag? Do you know that there’s a meaning behind each fold? If not, check out flagandbanner.com to learn!

What are your plans for Memorial Day Weekend? What’s your favorite activity?
