Mondays 12:00 – 1:00 pm Eastern Time In Backyard Biology we will explore nature in your own backyard. We will identify animals and plants native to your region, learn bird calls, and learn how to identify animal footprints. Literature Circle with Ms. Mars: The Calder Game (Gr. 5-8) – NEW COURSE!

Mondays 1:15 – 2:15 pm Eastern Time Calder, Petra and Tommy are back in this third book of Blue Balliett’s series.  Didn’t read the first two books? No worries!  You’ll be able to jump right into this exciting mystery story with its numerous surprises, twists and turns. Art, math, puzzles and suspense are all a part of this mystery set in a remote village in England.  There will be plenty to discuss and do in this Learning Lab adventure!  Please plan to borrow or purchase a copy of The Calder Game for use in this course. Coding: Intro to Game Design (Gr. 5-8)

COURSE FULL Tuesdays 2:30 – 3:30 pm Eastern Time

An introduction to programming for middle school students, this course introduces a fun scenario-based approach where students build two complete games. Side Scroller Survival introduces them to basics of motion and animation. In Beat Bot Battle, they program a robot to make it dance.  Students will use sequencing, pattern recognition, loops, conditional logic and other tech skills to create programs. Learn about motion, broadcasting messages and adding special effects, sound and music to your game. Instructor: B. Farrell

Magic Tree House Series: Civil War (Gr. 1-5) – NEW COURSE!

Tuesdays 1:15 – 2:15 pm Eastern Time Fans of the Magic Tree House book series will love journeying with Jack and Annie through the pages of Civil War on Sunday. Explore this pivotal event in American history as we gain an understanding of the war which temporarily divided our nation.  You will learn about key issues, battles, and leaders of the Civil War as we transport back in time on this daring escapade.  Please plan to borrow or purchase a copy of Civil War on Sunday for use in this course. Architecture with Brick Building II (Gr. 1-8)

Tuesdays 7:00 – 8:00 pm Eastern Time Architecture with Brick Building I is NOT required to enjoy this course. Have you ever wondered how your community playground was designed? During this course students will explore the history of playground development, the development of playground equipment and the 7 Universal Principles of Playground Architecture. We will work through these topics with the use of LEGO® blocks and/or the LEGO DIGITAL DESIGNER® computer program. Highly engaging hands on activities and imagination are the foundation of this course, which culminates with students creating and sharing models of their own Dream Playgrounds! Instructor: M. Vogel

Fun with Science: Archaeology (Gr. 5-8)

COURSE FULL – Tuesdays 12:30 – 1:30 pm Eastern Time

Are you intrigued by both science and history? Would you like to dig for ancient artifacts and uncover the secrets of the past? From Native Americans villages to Ancient Egyptian tombs, there is something for everyone in this course, which explores the how and why of archaeology. You may want to explore a dig site on your own after learning the skills of this amazing science, which links our present to our past! Instructor: R. Dausman

Delightful Data, Charts & Graphs – NEW COURSE!

Wednesdays 11:30 – 12:30 pm Eastern Time Gathering and reporting information has never been more fun!  Open the door to the world of statistics and data with this course designed to introduce the youngest learners to the basics of interpreting and creating many different kinds of charts and graphs such as pictographs, bar graphs, pie charts and many others. Fun with Science: Marine Biology II* (Gr. 5-8)

COURSE FULL – Wednesdays 11:30 – 12:30 pm Eastern Time

Dive further into your ocean studies! Explore the depths of the oceans in greater detail and discover more of what the mysterious ocean holds. A great follow up to our Fun with Science: Marine Biology course, this course is for middle school students and will build and add to concepts and facts about the ocean and the life within it. Ocean composition, ocean currents and biological interactions in the ocean are just a few of the topics we’ll investigate. Instructor: C. Berg

K’Nex Education Series:  Intro to Robotics* (Gr. 1-5)

LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE – Thursdays 11:30 – 12:30 pm Eastern Time

Even the youngest children are fascinated with robotic toys!  That is what makes this simple and compound machines course for students in grades 1 – 5 so much fun.  This introductory course will open the door to the amazing world of machines and allow students to explore elements of physical science in their own creations. *Additional purchase of the K’Nex Education Simple and Complex Machines Kit ($65) is required. Fantastic Fantasy Literature (Gr. 5-8) – NEW COURSE!

Thursdays 1:30 – 2:30 pm Eastern Time The fantasy genre has taken readers of all ages by storm, from new twists on old tales and myths to renewed interest in the classic fantasy stories of authors like Tolkien and Lewis.  Students are going to love reading and writing fantasy stories in this course designed to improve literature interpretation and story telling skills.  Let your imagination soar with dragons or journey deep into the center of the earth with prehistoric creatures, then get ready to experience the wild adventures of fantasy literature. K’Nex Education Series: Amusement Park Experience*

Thursdays 2:30 – 3:30 pm Eastern Time Did you love exploring architecture with Ms. Mars?  Now you can take your construction skills to a whole new level!  This course will give students the opportunity to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to the design of amusement park rides and innovations.  Integrating these curriculum areas into a hands-on course gives meaningful application to each area of study and shows students the connections real designers and inventors use everyday.  The enormous kit offers students many opportunities to extend their learning beyond what is covered in class.  *Additional purchase of the K’Nex Education Amusement Park Experience Kit ($275) is required.  Instructor: M.
