Beginning Writing (Gr. 1-5)

Thursdays 1:30 – 2:30 pm Eastern Time Beginning Writing is an interactive course that will boost every student’s approach to thinking on paper. We’ll explore writing wherever we find it: on cereal boxes, in magazines, and in the mailbox. Along the way, students will create written pieces that build their own writing style in expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing while learning to build better sentence and paragraphs. Magic Tree House Series: Ice Age (Gr. 1-5) – NEW COURSE!

Tuesdays 12:00 – 1:00 pm Eastern Time Jack and Annie are off on a chilly adventure in the story Sunset of the Sabertooth.  What does a trip to the Ice Age have in store for them?  What can we learn about this fascinating time in Earth’s history as we examine the people and animals who lived in a cold and wild place?  History, science and amazing exploration collide in this fun course.  Please plan to borrow or purchase the book Sunset of the Sabertooth for use with this course.  Instructor: K. Exploring Art Today, Every Way (Gr. 1-5) – NEW COURSE!

Wednesdays 1:15 – 2:15 pm Eastern Time What do you know about art styles such as Pop, Op, Folk, Modern, and Cartoonists?  More importantly, what are you ready to learn?! Ms. Mars is back with a brand new course to entice you with the amazing art techniques of artists such as Grandma Moses, Wyeth, Lange, and many, many more!  Students will learn about the artists, but also have the joy of creating art as they mimic the artists’ styles in their own original work.  Materials lists will be provided by the instructor. Kitchen Chemistry (Gr. 1-5)

Section 1 – Mondays 12:00 – 1:00 pm Eastern Time

In Kitchen Chemistry we will use household items to conduct Chemistry experiments. We will conduct simple labs including: looking the acidity of common foods, making rock candy we can eat, and learning basic science and lab report writing skills.  This course will help students understand the applications of chemistry right in their own home, a great way to introduce chemistry concepts for our youngest students. Architecture with Brick Building I (Gr. 1-8)

Tuesdays 7:00 – 8:00 pm Eastern Time Do you enjoy building activities? Have you ever wondered how your home was designed? Do you enjoy working with LEGO® blocks? Yes! Then this is the course for you! We will investigate the Foundations of Architecture and use LEGO® blocks and a LEGO® computer program to build models of our course content. Students will enjoy using their hands and imaginations during the class and when completing homework assignments. Pictures of students’ completed homework assignments are shared during each class. The course wraps up with a final project that involves building their dream home! Come join Ms. Mars in a course where you will learn, grow and design! Instructor: M. Vogel

 

Study Skills (Gr. 5-12)

Wednesdays 2:30 – 3:30 pm Eastern Time Are your school papers unorganized? Does your study area look like a tornado raced through? Do you feel overwhelmed by your schoolwork, especially when it comes to test time. During this course students will learn how to organize their physical environment, their schoolwork, and their minds so that they can enjoy more academic success and focus. Ms. Mars will work with you on topics such as, getting the most out of your study area, how to take notes, and discovering how you learn best. Class and homework assignments involve fun activities that give students insight into themselves and how to build on their current skills. High school students are not awarded credit for this course. Literature Circle with Ms. Mars: The Wright 3 (Gr. 5-8) – NEW COURSE!

Mondays 12:00 – 1:00 pm Eastern Time Ms. Mars brings literature to life in this 10-week course, which focuses on the book The Wright 3, the sequel to Blue Balliett’s Chasing Vermeer. Don’t worry if you didn’t read the first book in the series.  You can jump right into the engaging plot with this course! This is so much more than just an entertaining story! Students will get to interact with the text to solve a mystery and explore concepts related to art, math, geography and history. Join super sleuths Petra and Calder on a a new literary escapade. Please plan to borrow or purchase the book The Wright 3 for use during the session. Instructor: M. Vogel

 

Coding: Intro to Game Design (Gr. 5-8)  SECTION CLOSED

Tuesdays 2:30 – 3:30 pm Eastern Time An introduction to programming for middle school students, this course introduces a fun scenario-based approach where students build two complete games. Side Scroller Survival introduces them to basics of motion and animation. In Beat Bot Battle, they program a robot to make it dance.  Students will use sequencing, pattern recognition, loops, conditional logic and other tech skills to create programs. Learn about motion, broadcasting messages and adding special effects, sound and music to your game. Instructor: B. Farrell

 

K’Nex Education Series:  Renewable Energy* (Gr. 5-8)

Mondays 1:15 – 2:15 pm Eastern Time Renewable energy resources are an expanding topic in Earth and Environmental Sciences; ways to harness these resources and provide inexpensive options to power homes and industries are constant areas of scientific research.  Students in this hands-on course will expand their knowledge of alternative energy sources, current uses, and the benefits and drawbacks of future potential applications.  This is the perfect complement to middle level Earth Science courses.  *Additional purchase of the K’Nex Education Investigating Solar Energy Kit  ($70) is required. Architecture with Brick Building II (Gr. 1-8) – SECTION CLOSED

Thursdays 4:15 – 5:15 pm Eastern Time Have you ever wondered how your community playground was designed? Would you like to know the history of playground development? You are in the right course! During this course students will explore the history of playground development, the development of playground equipment and the 7 Universal Principles of Playground Architecture. We will work through these topics with the use of LEGO® blocks and/or the LEGO DIGITAL DESIGNER® computer program. Students will engage in the course topics through hands on activities and the use of their imagination. The course ends with student presentations of a model of their own Dream Playground!
