Fourth Grade Homeschool Curriculum
The Fourth Grade Homeschool Curriculum packages from Bridgeway Academy are customized for your child to ensure academic success. The focus of fourth grade is to build foundational skills, increase interest in a variety of topics, and engage homeschooled students in independent study that will lead to a love for learning. Bridgeway’s Fourth Grade Homeschooling Curriculum is presented below based upon subject categories.
English / Language Arts
The fourth grade English/Language Arts program is designed to continue building foundational skills while encouraging students to use those skills in writing.
Students study grammar and literature as well as effective writing and mechanics. Punctuation, parts of speech, spelling and study skills are reinforced in writing assignments, which involve creative writing, exposition, explanatory, persuasive, narrative, letter writing and research writing.
Reading and Literature
Reading and using novels as a tool, fourth grade students increase their knowledge of understanding the author’s purpose, character, plot and vocabulary development, drawing inferences, cause-and-effect relationships, sequential order, comprehension and fluency.
Fourth-grade social studies focuses on geography. Fourth-grade materials include a study of world geography, topography and climatology as well as seaport cities, desert lands, tropical rain forests and the polar regions.
Other fourth-grade materials cover the geography of our country and people by region: U.S. overview, Northeast, Southeast, North-Central, Rocky Mountain, Southwest and Pacific.
All students learn to use maps and globes for understanding geography and cultures.
Math Problem Solving
Our fourth-grade mathematics curriculum continues on a daily basis to emphasize basic skills while continuing to develop reasoning, computational and analytical skills. Fourth-graders learn how to communicate mathematical thought in both written and oral forms. An emphasis is placed on making connections between the textbook and real-life math experiences. Mathematic proficiency is developed in whole number addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students explore place value up to the trillions.
Fourth-graders develop additional money sense and learn how to make change and balance a checkbook. Continuing on a working understanding of fractions, students will reduce and begin to add and subtract fractions. They are introduced to greatest common factors and least common denominators.
Advanced fourth-grade mathematicians are asked to multiply and divide fractions as well. Students also explore customary and metric measurement systems, geometry, graphing and basic algebra.
Bridgeway’s fourth-grade science program incorporates both written instruction and interactive, hands-on experiences promoting the natural curiosity, interest and discovery found in young learners.
Material studied in Earth Science includes geology, weather, the solar system, botany and zoology.
In life science, units include a focus on health, nutrition and exercise, systems of the body and environmental effects on life.
Physical science topics include matter, changes in states of matter, the water cycle, scientific methods of observation, chemistry, magnetism and energy.
Fourth grade students may opt to take electives through our online learning labs. Visit the Learning Labs page to learn more about these live, interactive courses where students learn with students from all over the world.
