Second Grade Homeschool Curriculum
The 2nd Grade Homeschool Curriculum packages from Bridgeway Academy are customized for your child to ensure academic success. The focus of second grade is to develop reading and math skills and to introduce homeschooled students to other subjects. Bridgeway’s Second Grade Homeschooling Curriculum is presented below based upon subject categories.
English / Language Arts
Phonics and reading continue to be integral parts of the 2nd grade language arts experience.
Students also study basic grammar and mechanics such as punctuation, capitalization and parts of speech.
Writing is an integral part of the curriculum in second grade; therefore, students learn to write both creatively and more formally.
Reading and Literature
Phonics and reading make up the majority of the 2nd grade reading program with the goal of building readers and preparing students to make the transition from learning to read, to reading to learn.
Students will also take part in a focused study of four classic novels throughout the school year.
Bridgeway’s 2nd-grade social studies curriculum includes map and globe skills that include land and water, maps and map keys, directions, globes, continents, oceans, boundaries, map labels and the atlas.
Students also engage in a basic study of the United States and key leaders, as well as a look at neighborhoods past and present, people at work and various laws.
Math Problem Solving
Our 2nd-grade mathematics curriculum provides daily math concepts and practice. The mathematics goals for our second-graders include exploring numbers and operations, classification, time, value and measurement, geometry, problem solving and reasoning skills.
Additional skills include using graphs, discovering patterns, understanding the value of and counting coins, communicating mathematical thinking in written and oral forms and, most importantly, making connections among mathematical ideas, real-life experiences and math proficiency.
Bridgeway’s 2nd-grade science program includes written instruction as well as interactive, hands-on experiences promoting the natural curiosity, interest and discovery found in young learners.
In physical science, living matter and nonliving matter, concepts of natural versus man-made, solids, liquids, gases, heat and light, magnets, and understanding chemical and physical changes via scientific experiments are covered.
Life science units include a study of health, wellness, safety and living things including animals and plants.
2nd grade students may opt to take electives through our online learning labs. Visit the Learning Labs page to learn more about these live, interactive courses where students learn with students from all over the world.
