Compulsory School Age

Education Tax Credit Available to Homeschools in Illinois:
In 1999, the Illinois legislature passed an education tax credit that allows up to $500 in excess of expenses of $250 for tuition, book fees, and lab fees to be deducted from state income tax. This credit is available to any public or private school student. (Under Illinois law, homeschooled students have the same legal status as private school students.)

Illinois Legal Home Schooling Options:
Option: 1
Legal Option: Operate a home school in Illinois state.
Attendance: 176 days *Not mandatory for private or homeschool students
Subjects: Reading, Language arts, biological and physical science, math, history and social sciences (which shall include a course in the U.S. and and Illinois constitution), fine arts, health and physical development, and character education.
Qualifications: None
Notice: None required
Recordkeeping: Maintain records of subjects taught, activities engaged in, samples of the child’s academic work and evaluations or a credible equivalent, and a written log showing the hours required under “attendance”
Testing: None
