Arkansas Home School Laws

Complete Homeschool ProgramBelow is brief summary of the home schooling law in Arkansas.

Compulsory School Age
“5 through 17 on or before September 1 of that year”; a child under age 6 on September 1 may be waived from kindergarten with submission of a state-provided form. *For the 2010-11 school year, the cutoff date will move to August 15. For the 2011-12 school year and afterwards, the cutoff date will be August 1.

Arkansas Legal Home Schooling Options:
Option: 1
Legal Option: Establish and operate a home school- homeschool
Attendance: None
Subjects: None
Qualifications: None
Notice: File written notice of intent to with the local superintendent by August 15 (for those starting in fall semester), December 15 (for those starting in spring semester), or 14 days prior to withdrawing child mid-semester from public school; re-file annually thereafter at beginning of school year.  *A first-time homeschooling notice must be delivered in person.
Recordkeeping: None
Testing: Participate in same state-mandated norm-referenced tests given to public school students (in grades 3-9); no cost to parent unless alternate testing procedures are approved. *No minimum score must be achieved by the home school student who is tested, but any student who refuses to participate in the testing program may be prosecuted for truancy.
