BRIDGEWAY ACADEMY
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HOME SCHOOLING WITH
BRIDGEWAY ACADEMY
Q. WHAT RECORD-KEEPING SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?
A. The academy keeps thorough records on all of its students including quarterly report cards and full accredited transcripts. The academy also provides standardized testing services and keeps all results on each students academic record.
Q. HOW MUCH RECORD-KEEPING AND PAPERWORK AM I REQUIRED TO DO?
A. Because the academy keeps records for all of its students, the record keeping for the parent is kept to a minimum. The parent simply records test scores and mails them to our office on a periodic basis. In states where a daily log is required, parents are responsible to keep one; however, built into our program is an excellent student daily log (goal charts) which the students find very easy to keep.
Q. WHAT SUBJECTS DOES THE HOME SCHOOL ACADEMY PROVIDE?
A. The Home School Academy provides
pre-school, elementary, secondary and college courses in each of the five core subject
areas. There are also a number of electives available on all levels. In addition, parents
may provide any number of electives on their own and submit them for Academy record
keeping. Visit our Scope & Sequence page and use the navigator to view
courses offered in each grade level.
Q. WHAT IS THE READING PROGRAM USED BY THE ACADEMY?
A. The Home School Academy uses a multi-sensory phonetic learning-to-read program that is designed to prepare a child to read on a first to second grade level. Within a period of 11 to 15 weeks, he/she becomes acquainted with cartoon animals, songs, and stories. These features help him learn letter sounds, alphabet sequence, and word relationships. Your child is also helped in his physical and character development through poems, displays, and various activities.
The program is presented in a step by step format which tells the
parent/supervisor exactly what to do every day. This ensures for the parent that
the child is receiving reading instruction in an effective and appropriate manner.
Q. WHAT SPECIAL SERVICES DOES THE HOME SCHOOL ACADEMY PROVIDE TO ITS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS?
A. Upon enrollment, all high school students receive a complete academic projection which lists all of the courses required for his/her graduation. The academy bases those decisions on four major factors;
1. What academic track is requested by the student (Honors, College Preparatory, Academic, Vocational)?
2. What are the students plans for the future (i.e. type of university, vocational school, work force, etc.)?
3. What courses, if any, have already been completed on a high school level?
4. What do the laws of the state in which the student resides require?
All academic projections are subject to parent approval which allows each family to contribute to setting up the requirements for each student.
The academy also provides an abundance of elective courses to meet the needs of the interests of all of its students.
All high school math and science courses have optional videos which enhance the instruction in the PACE. The colorful videos give students the opportunity to see first hand the worlds of math and science. He/she will visit the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia to study coral reefs, the forested mountains of North America to study grizzly bears, and enter the world of mathematics through colorful graphic illustrations and real life applications. Video lab experiments allow students to take part in science experiments as active participants rather than simple observers.
Graduating students also receive an accredited diploma and may participate in graduation ceremonies. The academy also provides complete transcript services and will send transcripts to all institutions as requested by the student.
Q. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACADEMIC TRACKS?
A. All of our academic tracks have different course and credit hour requirements. However, each student must meet the minimum number of credit requirements for his/her state.
The vocational track requires a minimum of 21 credit hours which are filled according to state laws. This track usually consists of courses designed to fill the academic needs of the students and to prepare him/her for the work force.
The academic track requires a minimum of 21 credit hours and is designed to prepare the student for entrance into a vocational school or a community or state college. The courses prescribed will be contingent on the future plans of the student as well.
The college preparatory track requires a minimum of 23 credit hours and is designed to prepare the student for entrance into a college or university. Careful consideration is given to the entrance requirements of the type of college or university the student plans to attend. Therefore, courses will vary among students. This track is the most highly recommended track for our students.
The honors track includes the standard college preparatory courses plus additional attainment of the very highest quality preparation for a college education. This track requires a minimum of 26 credit hours.
Q. IS THERE A TIME REQUIREMENT FOR EACH COURSE OR FOR THE SCHOOL DAY?
A. The academy operates under the mandated 180 day school year. We do not set up time requirements in any way. The parent/supervisor may make those decisions as he/she sees fit. Most of our students complete their core subjects early and use the afternoons for additional training in other areas.
Q. HOW DO I KNOW THAT I AM STRUCTURING MY CHILDS EDUCATION PROPERLY?
A. All of our parents receive a thorough home school handbook which clearly explains all of the steps involved in setting up a successful home school program. All forms are pictured and explained and a sample is prepared for your convenience. Furthermore, the handbook lists suggestions for providing health, nutrition and fire safety instruction, and provides step by step instruction on preparing a portfolio for your local superintendent (not required in all states).

The School of Tomorrow and Alpha Omega material is a self-instructional, individually prescribed, continuous progress curriculum which is designed to meet the needs of every child.
Q. WHAT IS A SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL CURRICULUM?
A. A self-instructional curriculum is one where the child receives the instruction for each subject in the curriculum itself. A parent using this curriculum acts as a partner in the learning rather than a full-time teacher. He/she provides guidance in difficult areas and supervision over the students. This is ideal for a parent teaching more than one grade level and ensures that the students receive the instruction they need in order to succeed. It also allows the parent time to be creative in their own instruction and implement programs he/she would otherwise be unable to do.
Our self-instructional curriculum consists of 10-12 bite-size packets of learning per subject in each grade level. These booklets, much like a chapter in a book, contain frequent check points (quizzes) and contain a review test before the final test is given. The curriculum allows time and practice for the students as they work toward academic mastery. Our bite-size booklets have the additional advantage of providing small, achievable units of study, which is particularly suitable for children who seem to be overwhelmed when handed an entire years worth of work in one volume.
Q. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY INDIVIDUALIZED CURRICULUM?
A. Whether the student is a high-achiever, moderate-paced learner or one in need of extra time to complete tasks, the individualized learner centered process proceeds at the exact level determined by the childs ability. Students advance through the curriculum at the optimum rate of achievement for them. This is what is meant by individualization. Individualization makes it possible for each student to master the subject matter before moving on. Such mastery is the foundation upon which all future learning is built.
Q. HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE EXACT LEVEL AT WHICH A STUDENT SHOULD BEGIN?
A. Before enrollment in the Academy, students are given a series of placement tests designed to place them into the program. These tests are designed to diagnose specific learning deficiencies and strengths in each area of the curriculum. The tests enable us to place the student at a level where he can achieve and experience the joy of learning while achieving academic excellence.
Q. HOW DOES AN INDIVIDUALIZED MASTERY BASED CURRICULUM PROVIDE A MEANS OF ACHIEVING ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE?
A. Individualization produces academic excellence. One reason is because students take responsibility for their own learning. Another reason is because of the character training and goal setting.
Moreover, Learner centered curriculum produces more students that go on to higher education and into business and professional pursuits with confidence and superb educational background.
Q. HOW DOES THE CURRICULUM PROVIDE CHARACTER TRAINING?
A. Principles of character and illustrations of the character traits are sequenced in cartoon and motivational form throughout each booklet.
The foundations of wisdom are also carefully laid. From the eighth level on, WISDOM orientation and objectives guide the student in a practical development of walking with God.
