LANGUAGE ARTS

The sixth-graders at Bridgeway Academy take part in an integrated language arts course. Students review sentence and paragraph structure and expand their writing into multiple paragraphs through descriptive, narrative and expository writing. They develop and expand their reading skills through the study of literature, which includes a variety of genres. Their language arts curriculum will also provide a study of grammar and vocabulary. Vocabulary, grammar, usage and mechanics are also integrated into their writing assignments throughout the year.

Language Arts ACE-

The following course descriptions are for your information only and can seem overwhelming.

A Biblically based program that incorporates character-building principles into a careful study of grammar, mechanics, writing and literature. Twelve colorful workbooks present material in an independent study, mastery-based format, and teacher’s guides present both enrichment and remedial exercises to enhance the program, including a writing assignment for each unit and websites for additional practice and guidance.

In this level, your child continues studying grammar concepts and developing skills in sentence diagramming. There is special emphasis on sentence patterns, clauses, and kinds of sentences. The material reviews punctuation. outlining. letter writing, and paragraph structure and writing. The student learns to express himself clearly and must apply principles of composition learned earlier.

Language Arts AOP-A complete Biblically based curriculum that focuses on the development and integration of communication skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The 10-workbook student materials in this program function as the learning base, supporting instruction in communication essentials for all students. Includes enrichment activities and opportunities for independent study to allow for individualization based on student needs and interests.

In this level, your child will focus on reading and writing skills in conjunction with a study of literature and will be challenged to learn to read with with purpose and understanding.

Language Arts E6-A mastery-based program that presents the study of grammar, mechanics, reading and vocabulary in a step-by-step format. Ten workbooks present material in a nondistracting black-and-white format and are ideal for the struggling or distractible student who needs material presented in smaller, more focused chunks.

Language Arts W-The combination of this student textbook and workbook provides students with a focused look at the basics of English grammar and mechanics. Students combine this basic English course with a study of vocabulary and reading comprehension for a complete language arts program.

Language Arts DS6-For the struggling student. In this course, students receive a separate book for each of the following: reading skill, vocabulary, spelling and phonics, and grammar and usage.

By separating the key components for language arts, students are instructed and challenged each day in reading comprehension and analysis, vocabulary, writing skills, grammar and usage, and spelling and phonics. Studies in vocabulary, grammar and phonics continue to provide the basis for strong writing skills.

MATHEMATICSHomeschool Curriculum Bookmark

In sixth-grade mathematics, students focus on fractions and decimals and begin the transition from concrete arithmetic to more abstract concepts and procedures. Students explore probability and statistics compound interest; functions and coordinate graphing; integers; exponential expressions; divisibility concepts; prime factorization; ratios and proportions; radius, circumference and pi; and complementary and supplementary angles.

Mathematics Horizons-A colorful and intensive math program that includes two student books and two teacher’s guides. This rigorous program requires students to complete a variety of math activities each day.

Mathematics ACE-A Biblically based program that incorporates character-building principles into a careful study of mathematics. Twelve colorful workbooks present material in an independent study, mastery-based format, and teacher’s guides present both enrichment and remedial exercises to enhance the program.

In this level there is thorough and ongoing review of all basic math concepts, emphasis on mastering more difficult problems, concentrated study of fractions and decimals, and learning of Roman numerals through one thousand.

Mathematics E6-A mastery-based program that presents each concept in a step-by-step format. Ten workbooks present material in a nondistracting black-and-white format and are ideal for the struggling or distractible student who needs material presented in smaller, more focused chunks.

Mathematics Singapore-Appropriate for the advanced student. A series of elementary math textbooks and workbooks meant to be part of a system of learning in which adult supervision and independent practice go hand in hand. The main feature of this series is the use of the concrete/pictorial/abstract approach. The students are provided with the necessary learning experiences beginning with the concrete and pictorial stages, followed by the abstract stage to enable them to learn mathematics meaningfully. This approach encourages an active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas and problem solving. This helps develop the foundation students will need for more advanced mathematics.

Mathematics Saxon-Includes a detailed teacher’s guide and a student workbook. A cyclical approach to math that presents information in small amounts and continually repeats those same concepts throughout the school year. Instruction relies upon an active teaching role.

General Science ACE- More details and in-depth studies of subject matter previously presented include chemistry, light and electricity, and magnets and magnetism. Students also study the central nervous system, skeletal and muscular systems, internal organs and the germ theory of disease. This science course contains 12 separate workbooks and a teacher’s guide. Mastery approach.

General Science AOP- Focuses on the spectacular vacuum and vastness of space, the earth’s role within our solar system, the unique planets and the never-ending cosmos by covering themes like molecular genetics, chemical structure, light and sound, motion and its measurement and Spaceship Earth. This course also emphasizes plant and animal systems, astronomy and the Earth’s action within the universe. This science course contains 10 separate worktexts and a teacher’s guide. Critical thinking skills a must.

General Science Singapore-In this course, science is taught as an interesting subject that helps to answer questions about the world around us. The subject is developed through discovery, investigation and analysis. Topics include diversity, classification, energy, living together, characteristics of the environment, food chains and food webs, adaptations for survival, our impact on the environment, biotechnology and telecommunications.

SOCIAL STUDIES – GEOGRAPHYHomeschool Curriculum Bookmark

Students should have prior knowledge of basic social studies skills and the ability to think critically about the world around them. Students should also have a basic familiarity of the states and capitals of the United States and knowledge of basic geographic areas of the world – the seven continents and four oceans. The year includes a focused study of world history and continent geography. Appealing subjects like The Cradle of Civilization, Greece and Rome, The Middle Ages, Six South American Countries and Africa are covered, as well as great leaders throughout history.

Social Studies ACE-A Biblically based program that incorporates character-building principles into a careful study of social studies. Twelve colorful workbooks present material in an independent study, mastery-based format, and teacher’s guides present both enrichment and remedial exercises to enhance the program, including historical fiction recommendations and websites for further research.

In this level your child will study from Adam through the Great Awakening. The course includes an introduction to the Bible, the early church, and Reformation leaders.

Social Studies AOP-Ten worktexts that allow students to work independently while exercising critical thinking and analysis. Teacher’s guide includes engaging lessons about latitude, longitude, hemisphere and different regions and takes the guesswork out of understanding geography.

Level six focuses on world history and geography.

Social Studies Steck Vaughn-Features interactive activities that allow students to reflect on the readings using high-level thinking skills and activities that use maps, charts and illustrations. Topics include world cultures, geography, ancient civilizations, rise of the West, eastern and western hemispheres, and profiles of key historical figures. An additional text entitled Maps, Globes and Graphs provides additional study of geography and map skills.

Social Studies Walch-This non-Biblical textbook curriculum includes a student textbook and corresponding workbook that provide instruction and reinforcement activities to help solidify the material. Students will compare civilizations, research projects on the Internet and complete written analyses of various topics studied.

World history I provides a comprehensive overview of world history, from prehistoric civilizations to the Middle Ages. It also presents engaging profiles of international historical figures and focuses on essential people, places and events that shaped the world.

World Geography Walch-This non-Biblical textbook curriculum includes a student textbook and corresponding workbook that provide instruction and reinforcement activities to help solidify the material. This course provides a current overview of world boundaries, helps students readily visualize other parts of the world with easy-to-read, detailed maps, explains how boundaries change as new nations are formed and gives students an appreciation for other cultures with in-depth country profiles.

ARTHomeschool Curriculum Bookmark
