Phonics and Reading

Language arts class is integrated into other areas of the kindergarten curriculum. The step-by-step parent guides give parents the assurance that they are “doing it right.” Children love the colorful student books that give them that “grown up” feeling and are excited about reading independently.

Bridgeway’s kindergarten reading programs focus on phonics, reading, listening skills and writing.

Parent guides also enable parents to enrich the curriculum with literature, computer games and basic writing.

Based on your child’s placement testing, your advisor will work with you to determine the right program for your child:

Reading Horizons includes four colorful student workbooks that reinforce the lessons, four teacher’s guides that provide detailed instruction for parents and four student readers that children and parents read together throughout the school year. Students will learn a new letter sound each day and progress quickly through the alphabet. Advanced lessons provide instruction in consonant blends, digraphs, double vowels, and double consonant endings. Students also practice handwriting skills throughout the year.

Kindergarten with ACE and Christi--This full-year program is designed for the younger kindergarten homeschooler. Easy to use and easy to administer, parents simply follow the detailed teacher’s guide to provide instruction in letters and letter sounds, animals, basic science and social studies, numbers and mathematics.

Students love the sixty colorful workbooks filled with Bible and animal pictures, fun to do worksheets and full-color picture stories that encourage a love for reading. With this program, your child learns the phonetic sounds for all letters so that when he is ready to learn to read, he will do so. He will also learn social skills, the wonders of God’s world and the reality of God’s love.

Built into the program are character-building stories and Bible stories designed to not only provide essential instruction, but also to build your child’s listening comprehension skills.

This program can be supplemented with handwriting practice to provide kindergarten homeschoolers to develop fine motor skills.

ABC’s with ACE and Christi. Actually designed for the first half of first grade, many homeschoolers find that this program is ideal for their kindergarten homeschooler. One-on-one instruction allows parents to help their student gain essential reading skills each day.

The program is structured to introduce a new letter sound each day for three days and to review the previous three lessons on the fourth. Thus, many parents choose to plan a four-day week for phonics and reading and reserve the fifth day for extra-curricular activities, science labs, or field trips.

The complete program includes two teacher binders filled with detailed step-by-step instructions for each lesson and twelve student workbooks that provide opportunities for children to respond to the instruction and to practice their handwriting skills.

Because each letter sound corresponds to a specific animal who possesses a specific character trait, this program is a wonderful tool for emphasizing character.

Once complete, students move on to Reader with Development Skills, where they practice reading comprehension skills and gain more in-depth instruction in language arts, science and social studies.
