Social Studies
Bridgeway’s social studies program is designed to assist students in acquiring knowledge about themselves and others and how they relate to other people and cultures in the world.
First Grade | Second Grade | Third Grade | Fourth Grade | Fifth Grade
Bridgeway’s social studies curriculum introduces young students to the basic principles of life. Students learn to recognize and are challenged and motivated to do what is right. They also learn to be kind, to share and to be obedient to rules and laws. Students also learn about themselves, their families, their country and the world.
Your advisor will select one of the following options for your student based on his or her academic needs and ideal learning style:
Social Studies A1- A Biblically based program that incorporates character-building principles into a careful study of social studies. Twelve colorful workbooks present material in an independent study, mastery-based format, and teacher’s guides present both enrichment and remedial exercises to enhance the program, including historical fiction recommendations and websites for further research.
Social Studies AO1- History and geography are included in this basic integrated program that teaches and reinforces Scriptural truths and principles. Students will develop an understanding of and an appreciation for God’s activity as seen in the record of man and his relationships. To achieve this goal, the program focuses on the strategic presentation of history, geography, government and citizenship, economics and map skills.
Social Studies SV1- A good choice for the struggling reader, this course is presented in a manner that students will understand and enjoy without feeling overwhelmed. Features interactive activities that allow students to reflect on the readings using high-level thinking skills and activities that use maps, charts and illustrations. An additional text entitled Maps, Globes and Graphs provides additional study of geography and map skills.
Bridgeway’s second-grade social studies curriculum includes map and globe skills that include land and water, maps and map keys, directions, globes, continents, oceans, boundaries, map labels and the atlas. A basic study of the United States and key leaders, as well as a look at neighborhoods past and present, people at work and various laws.

Third-grade social studies covers communication, conservation, communities, agriculture, geography and the discovery of America, as well as colonization and slavery. This positive approach to history encourages students to love and respect their country. The heroes and heroines to whom they are introduced provide role models representing ideals and aspirations for which students can strive. Other topics include community types, geography, government, what communities share, special people profiles and map and geography skills.

Fourth-grade social studies is a focus on geography. Fourth-grade materials include a study of world geography, topography and climatology as well as seaport cities, desert lands, tropical rain forests and the polar regions.
Other fourth-grade materials cover the geography of our country and people by region: U.S. overview, northeast, southeast, north-central, Rocky Mountain, southwest and Pacific.
All students learn to use maps and globes for understanding geography and cultures.

The major areas of study and work include an expanded knowledge of home, neighborhood, community, city, state, country, hemisphere and globe and an expanded knowledge of basic geography, advanced skills at using maps, common landforms and significant geopolitical terms.
Also stressed is expanded knowledge of the earliest peoples of America, sections of the United States claimed by early European explorers during the colonial period, development of the new colonies under the administration of European figures, advancement of the British Colonists, the causes for and outcomes of the American Revolution and exposure to the United States Constitution.
Students study all major U.S. conflicts, such as the Revolutionary War to the First Gulf War. The material also includes systems of government, great leaders and current events affecting our world.

Social Studies SV5- With this world geography course, students learn about all parts of the world’s geography, continent by continent with special focus on selected countries of the world. Beautifully illustrated with full-color photographs and a specially developed teacher’s guide that correlates world literature with each region studied and directs students on keeping a travel journal. Fun to read and easy to understand, this is an ideal course for the hands-on student.
